SPIRIT (Spatially-Aware Information Retrieval on the Internet) is a research project that has been engaged in the design and implementation of a search engine to find documents and datasets on the web relating to places or regions referred to in a query.

The project has created software tools and techniques that can be used to produce search engines and websites that display intelligence in the recognition of geographical terminology. In order to demonstrate and evaluate the project outcomes, a prototype spatially-aware search engine has been built and is serving as the platform for testing and evaluation of new techniques in geographical information retrieval.

SPIRIT was funded through the EC Fifth Framework Programme, and had been a collaborative effort with six European partnersIn raising the level of intelligence of web search engines, the project has contributed to the development of the Semantic Web and to the exploitation of geographically referenced information.

This website provides information on the project and its results as they arise, as well as other relevant information.
